Chellan, the coir worker,at Villupuram

Chellan is residing at our street, but with no home and no family. Are you interested in knowing about the personality of Chellan? aged 30, short in stature even one can say'Chellan is a dwarf';twisted legs, short hands but strong and healthy;Where does he stay? How does he earn and live?Always prefer to lay in the payol of one of his friend's house, another coir worker.Chellan wakes up early in the morning at 4 a.m.Goes to a tea stall on the Trichy trunk road;order for his tea and sips it rather leisurely for about 15 minutes. Starts his work exactly by 5 a.m.He just sits on a stone nearby the rotating wheel that helps in preparation of the coir and rotates the wheel using its handle.Around 8 a.m he has 'iddlis and sambar'a famous tiffin item in Tamil Nadu, given by his employer.Again goes for his work and rotate the coir making wheel upto 1 p.m.In the meanwhile, he refreashes himself with one or two beedis, all at his own cost. By 1 p.m, he stands up and go for his lunch, having either'sambar rice', 'curd rice' or 'biriyani', spending out of his own earnings. Then a loud sound comes from him what we call it as 'Eppam', the sign of a person who has completed his meals stomachful. And then he goes to the payol, his abode and sleeps soundly there, keeping his legs and hands widely stretched and open.Again wakes up by 6 p.m, often waken up by the inmates of the house with a series of abusive curses against him. Then he yawns and takes up his own time, unmindlful of the curses and the abusive words heaped against him and wades through in the twilight to a nearby slum. Drink one or two glasses of illicit liquor that he can afford to buy. Then he is not steady and does not return to his payol. One can see him either quarrel with a stranger in a babble of tongue or loudly cry in a coarse voice perhaps beaten up by somebody and we can even see him lying nearby the road, uncaring for decency or knowing nothing about it.Somebody says that he is a good for nothing fellow. But I have all my sympathies with him. After all, he works and earn out his livlihood and of course does not beg from anybody to eke out his life.People may not like him or even abhor him for his way of living.Being a handicapped person, oh sorry, a person physically challenged, earn out his living in the way known to him or in the way that is capable for him.He has got every right to live in this world. why not ?
