Timely order to hone up the language skills of the students.
Strike the rod when it is hot.Taking the cue from this proverb, the vice-chancellor of the Madras University recently
issued an order with the sole purpose of improving the language skills of his students.Of course, he had valid reasons in issuing such an order.
Despite making concrete steps to improve the language skills of his students in English, still the desired results were not forthcoming. The students were woefully falling short in their language skills when they faced the interview boards of corporate companies.Hence they could not find enough employment opportunities.Realizing the gravity of the situation, the vice-chancellor began to probe the reasons behind it.He convened a meeting of his subordinates and academicians to discuss the issue threadbare.Among the reasons found out, they highlighted one particular reason. Many students who opted for English as their medium of instruction, chose to write their examinations both in English and Tamil that acted as a hindrance in developing their language skills in English.
Hence, the vice-chancellor of the Madras University issued an order stipulating that the students who opted for English as their medium of instruction should write their examinations only in English, thereby preventing their practice of writing their examinations both in English and Tamil. While issuing this order the vice-chancellor also clarified that by issuing this order he had not intended to undermine the value of Tamil. He issued this order to improve the English language skills of his students and their employ ability. The idea behind the order was that an English medium student had to necessarily prepare for his examinations only by reading the English medium books and then write his Examination in English. Thus a students oral (reading) and written skills in the English language were bound to improve besides making them more confident to face the interview board for employment.
Thus the order of the vice-chancellor helped to place the derailed students back on their track and became successful in life.
